Description
-
Music From the First Minute: every tine is tuned, so any combination you pluck already sounds pleasant - no lessons needed to get started.
-
Small Enough to Actually Take With You: it fits in a bag, unlike a guitar or a keyboard, so it comes to the park and on the road trip.
-
A Gift People Remember: a handmade-looking wooden instrument lands better than another gadget for music lovers and curious kids.
-
A Quiet Way to Wind Down: the mellow tone and the resonance of the wooden body make it a calm thing to play at the end of the day.
-
Eleven Wood Styles: from plain acacia, bamboo, pine and walnut to carved deer, elk and ship designs.
A kalimba, or thumb piano, is one of the few instruments you can pick up with no background at all and still produce something worth listening to. Each metal tine is tuned to its own note, and the notes are arranged so that neighbouring tines sound good together. You hold the wooden body in both hands and pluck with your thumbs. Within a few minutes most people are playing a simple repeating pattern; within a week they are picking out melodies by ear.
The body is natural wood, which is where the warmth in the sound comes from, and it is the reason the instrument looks like something rather than a piece of consumer electronics. Eleven styles are available, from plain acacia, bamboo, pine and walnut through to carved deer, elk, tree and ship designs, so it can be chosen to suit the person receiving it. It is also genuinely portable in a way most instruments are not: it goes in a bag, comes out at a campsite and needs no cable, amplifier or stand.
Players often describe the kalimba as calming and use it to unwind, and that is a fair description of the experience rather than a health benefit. It is a musical instrument, not a therapeutic or medical product, and it is not a treatment for stress, anxiety or any other condition. If something is troubling you, please speak to a qualified clinician.
