Description

This tapered reamer bit opens up and cleans holes rather than starting them. The stepped taper lets you widen an existing hole gradually to whatever diameter you need, so one bit does the job of several fixed sizes and you stop swapping bits mid-job. The cutting edges shear rather than tear, which leaves a smooth wall and a clean rim instead of splinters and burrs.

It is ground from hardened steel and works through wood, plywood, aluminium, thin sheet metal and plastic. Chuck it into a standard cordless or corded drill, run at a moderate speed and let the taper do the cutting; forcing it or running it too fast will scorch wood and load up the flutes. Back the workpiece where you can so the exit side stays clean.

It is a useful bit to keep in the box for carpentry, cable runs, plumbing pass-throughs and general DIY where a hole ended up a size too small. Two sizes are available, so check the taper range against the holes you work with most. Wear eye protection, clamp the workpiece, clear swarf between passes, and wipe the bit down and store it dry so the edges do not corrode in a damp toolbox.
