This Worfa USB video capture adapter takes the composite output from a VHS deck, a camcorder, a DVD player or a games console and turns it into a video file on your computer, so family recordings stop depending on hardware that is getting harder to replace every year.

Setting it up is straightforward. Plug the yellow, white and red RCA leads into your player's output sockets, put the USB end into a free port, install the bundled capture software and press record on both the computer and the tape. There are no drivers to hunt down on most current Windows and macOS systems, and the adapter draws its power over USB, so there is no separate mains supply to find room for. The lead is roughly one metre long.

Capture runs in real time, which means a two-hour tape takes two hours: start it and leave it running. Once the file is on your drive you can trim it, split it into clips and back it up to a cloud folder or an external disk. Clean the tape heads first for the best picture, and record a short test to check your levels before you commit to a long recording.
